Temporary Skill Shortage Visa - (Subclass 482)

This is a temporary visa which lets the employer sponsor, to sponsor a worker to Australia as the skill is not available in Australia.

Basic Eligibility for Temporary Skill Shortage Visa 482:
01. Short-term Stream (Subclass 482)
This visa enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers where employers can’t source an appropriately skilled Australian worker.

Stay

  • You can stay for up to 2 years or up to 4 years.
  • Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.

With Short-term Stream 482 visa, you can

  • work in Australia for up to 2 years or up to 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid
  • if eligible, apply for permanent residence
  • Eligible 457 and TSS – short term stream visa holders will be able to apply through the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS), Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream.
  • study (you won’t receive government assistance)
  • if eligible, apply for permanent residence.

You must

  • be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible short-term skilled occupations
  • have at least 2 years relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field
  • have a relevant skills assessment if this is required for your occupation
  • work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt
  • meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempt from needing to show this

How long you can stay

This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for the period of time your employer nominates you for. This will be:

  • up to 2 years in most cases
  • up to 4 years if an ITO applies but the maximum length will depend on the actual ITO relevant to your circumstances
  • up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder

02. Medium-term Stream (Subclass 482)
This visa enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers where employers can’t source an appropriately skilled Australian worker.

Stay

  • Up to 4 years.
  • Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.

With this Medium-term Stream 482, you can

  • work in Australia for up to 4 years or up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder
  • study (you won’t receive government assistance)
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid
  • if eligible, apply for permanent residence

You must

  • be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible medium and long-term skilled occupations
  • have at least 2 years relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field
  • have a relevant skills assessment if this is required for your occupation
  • work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt
  • meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempt from needing to show this

How long you can stay

This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for the period of time your employer nominates you for up to a maximum period of 4 year or up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder.

  • a substantive visa, or
  • a Bridging visa A, Bridging visa B or Bridging visa C

Medium-term Stream
03. Labour Agreement Stream (Subclass 482)
This visa is for skilled workers nominated by employers who have a Labour Agreement. It lets you live and work in Australia temporarily. Labour agreements are developed between the Australian Government (represented by the Department) and employers.

Stay

  • Up to a maximum of 4 years, depending on the terms in the labour agreement.
  • Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.

With Labour Agreement Stream 482 visa, you can

  • work in Australian for up to 4 years for your sponsor or up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder
  • study (you won’t receive government assistance)
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid

You must

  • be nominated to work in a specified occupation under the terms of a Labour Agreement
  • have at least 2 years relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field
  • have a relevant skills assessment if this is required for your occupation
  • work only for your sponsor
  • meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempt from needing to show this

How long you can stay

This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for the period of time your employer nominates you for.

This will be up to a maximum of 4 years, depending on the:

  • terms in the labour agreement
  • the validity period of your visa

Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years

Usually, you can be in or outside Australia when you apply for this visa, and when we decide your application, but not in immigration clearance.

If you are applying in Australia, you must hold:

  • a substantive visa, or
  • a Bridging visa A, Bridging visa B or Bridging visa C

Process for Medium-term Stream (Subclass 482)
04. Subsequent entrant (Subclass 482)
This visa is for family members of subclass 457 and TSS visa holders who are applying separately for their TSS visa and wish to join the primary subclass 457 or TSS visa holder in Australia

Stay

You can stay for as long as your visa is valid.

With Subsequent entrant 482 visa you can

  • live, work and study in Australia
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid
  • study (you won’t receive government assistance)
  • if eligible, apply for permanent residence

You must

Be a partner or dependent of a subclass 482 or 457 visa holder

How long you can stay

This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for as long as your visa is valid.

Apply from

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when we decide on your application but not in immigration clearance.

If you are applying in Australia, you must hold:

  • a substantive visa, or
  • a Bridging visa A, Bridging visa B or Bridging visa C
