Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa - (Subclass 491)

The skilled work regional (provisional) visa is a visa that allows skilled workers to live and work in regional Australia. This visa is valid for five years, and during that time, the holder can live and work in any part of regional Australia.

The skilled work regional provisional visa (subclass 491) is a visa that allows you to live and work in regional Australia for up to five years. This visa is for skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia. You must have an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list and you must be nominated by an approved employer or sponsor.
Basic Eligibility
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa - Main applicant
This is a provisional visa. It is for skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia

With Provisional Visa 491 (main applicant), you can

  • stay in Australia for 5 years
  • live, work and study in a designated regional area of Australia
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid
  • apply for permanent residence after 3 years from the time your visa is granted
  • You must

  • be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you
  • have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list
  • have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • be invited to apply
  • satisfy the points test
  • How long you can stay

    This is a temporary visa. You can stay until the visa ends.

    Apply from

  • You can be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance when you apply for the visa and when we decide on your application.
  • If you apply in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or a subclass 010 Bridging A visa, a subclass 020 Bridging B visa or a subclass 030 Bridging C visa, otherwise your application will not be valid.
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa – Subsequent entrant
    This visa is for a member of the family unit of someone who holds a Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)

    With Skilled work visa (subsequent entrant), you can

  • stay in Australia while the visa is valid
  • live, work and study in a specified regional area of Australia
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid
  • apply for permanent residency, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191)
  • You must

    be one of the members of the family unit, of a subclass 491 visa holder.

    How long you can stay

    This is a temporary visa. You can stay until the visa that your family member holds ends.

  • You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when we decide your application but not in immigration clearance.
  • If you apply in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or a Subclass 010 Bridging A visa, a Subclass 020 Bridging B visa or a Subclass 030 Bridging C visa, otherwise your application will not be valid.
  • Processing Time

  • 25% of applications: 3 Months
  • 50% of applications: 3 Months
  • 75% of applications: 6 Months
  • 90% of applications: 11 Months
