Skilled Independent Visa - (Subclass 189)

With this visa, the invited workers, eligible New Zealand, Hong Kong, or British National citizen passport holders with relevant skills and qualifications required in Australia can apply.

Point tested Stream - Subclass 189
This visa lets invited workers with skills we need, to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

With point tested stream 189 visa, you can

  • stay in Australia permanently
  • work and study anywhere in Australia
  • sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
  • if eligible, become an Australian citizen
  • travel to and from Australia for 5 years

    • You must

  • have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • be invited to apply for this visa
  • satisfy the points test

    • Apply from

  • You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when we decide on your application, but not in immigration clearance.
  • If you apply in Australia, you must hold a substantive or a subclass 010 Bridging A visa, a subclass 020 Bridging B visa or a subclass 030 Bridging C visa, otherwise your application will not be processed.

    • New Zealand Stream - Subclass 189
    This visa lets eligible New Zealand citizens who have demonstrated commitment and contribution to Australia, live and work in Australia permanently.

    With New Zealand Stream 189 visa, you can

  • stay in Australia indefinitely
  • work and study anywhere in Australia
  • sponsor eligible family members for permanent residence
  • if eligible, become an Australian citizen
  • travel to and from Australia for 5 years

    • You must

  • hold a New Zealand Special Category (subclass 444) visa
  • have usually resided in Australia for at least the last 5 years
  • have started living here on or before 19 February 2016
  • in most cases, have a taxable income at or above a specific income threshold for each of the required income years prior to lodging an application

    • Apply from

  • You must be in Australia and holding a Subclass 444 visa when you apply for the visa.
  • Any family members included in your application can be in or outside of Australia when you apply. However, if they are in Australia, they must hold a substantive visa or bridging A, B or C visa.

    • Hong Kong Stream - Subclass 189
    This visa lets eligible Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders who have demonstrated commitment to Australia, live and work in Australia permanently.

    With Hong Kong Stream 189 visa, you can

  • stay in Australia permanently
  • work and study anywhere in Australia
  • sponsor eligible family members for permanent residence
  • if eligible, become an Australian citizen
  • travel to and from Australia for 5 years

    • You must

  • hold a Hong Kong passport or a British National (Overseas) passport
  • meet certain visa and residence requirements

    • Apply from

    You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when we decide on your application, but not in immigration clearance.
