With this visa, the child living outside Australia can live with his/her family in Australia.

Child Visa - Subclass 101
The child visa is a family visa issued to children whose parents or legal guardians are living in Australia. To get this visa you have to sponsor your child living outside Australia. The child must be younger than 18 years of age and must be a dependent of their parent or guardian. This visa allows the child to live, study, and work in Australia indefinitely.

With this visa the child can

  • migrate to Australia as a permanent resident
  • study and access Medicare
  • apply for Australian citizenship if eligible
  • stay in Australia indefinitely
  • work in Australia

    • The child must

  • be a dependent child of a parent who is an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen or holder of an Australian permanent visa
  • be under 18 years, a full-time student aged over 18 and under 25 and financially dependent on the parent, or over 18 and unable to work due to a disability
  • be single and dependent on the parent
  • be outside Australia when the application is made

    • Apply from

  • The child must be outside Australia when the application is submitted.

    • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years

    The child can travel to and from Australia as many times as they want for 5 years from the date we grant this visa. This is as long as the travel facility of this visa remains valid.

    If the child wants to travel after the initial 5-year travel facility:

  • they will need to apply for and be granted a Resident Return (RRV) visa so they can re-enter Australia as a permanent resident
  • they might also want to consider Australian citizenship. If they become an Australian citizen, they don’t require a visa to re-enter Australia. See more about eligibility requirements and current processing times for Australian citizenship
