Temporary Graduate Visa Australia subclass 485 can be defined as a category of visas that allows foreign students in Australia to study for a period of time. This type of visa is usually applied for by international students with the intention of eventually finding work and studying.

Basic Eligibility
There are many different types of work visas available, each with its own requirements and restrictions.
Graduate Work Stream 485
This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations Australia needs. It lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily.

Stay

  • Usually up to 18 months.
  • Temporarily increased to 24 months for visas granted from 1 December 2021. Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay for 5 years.

  • How long you can stay

  • This is a temporary visa. You can usually stay in Australia for 18 months.
  • The stay period will temporarily be increased from 18 to 24 months for visas granted from 1 December 2021.
  • Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
  • The visa is granted with multiple entry. You can leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
  • Processing Time

  • 25% of applications: 5 Months
  • 50% of applications: 11 Months
  • 75% of applications: 13 Months
  • 90% of applications: 17 Months
  • You must

  • be under 50 years of age
  • hold an eligible visa
  • have held a student visa in the last 6 months
  • have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list (Note: this is not required for applications lodged between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023)
  • have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation on the skilled occupation list (Note: this is not required for applications lodged between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023)
  • provide evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants when you apply
  • provide evidence you have applied for an AFP check when you apply
  • provide evidence of the required level of English with the application
  • Travel

  • You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
  • The time you spend outside Australia does not extend the visa.
  • Post Study Work Stream 485
    This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily.

  • Usually between 2 and 4 years, depending on your qualification.
  • Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay for 5 years.

  • live, study and work in Australia temporarily
  • bring your family members
  • How long you can stay

    This is a temporary visa. The length of your stay in Australia will depend on the level of your Australian study qualification.

  • bachelor degree (including honours): 2 years
  • masters by research and masters by coursework: 3 years
  • masters (extended): 3 years
  • doctoral degree: 4 years
  • Hong Kong and BNO passport holders who successfully complete a bachelor, masters or doctoral degree: 5 years
  • Processing Time

  • 25% of applications: 5 Months
  • 50% of applications: 6 Months
  • 75% of applications: 10 Months
  • 90% of applications: 11 Months
  • You must

  • be under 50 years of age
  • have applied for and been granted your first student visa on or after 5 November 2011
  • hold an eligible visa
  • have held a student visa in the last 6 months
  • have a recent degree in a CRICOS-registered course
  • provide evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants when you apply
  • provide evidence you have applied for an AFP check when you apply
  • provide evidence of the required level of English with the application
  • Travel

  • You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
  • The time you spend outside Australia does not extend the visa.
  • Second Post Study Work Stream 485
    This visa is for holders of a Temporary Graduate visa (first Post-Study Work stream or Replacement stream) who graduated with a degree from an Australian institution located in a regional area. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily.

    Stay

    Between 1 and 2 years depending on:

  • the regional location of the educational institution that you graduated from that led to the grant of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream
  • the regional area that you live in as the holder of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or your Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream
  • With this visa, you can

  • stay in Australia for between 1 and 2 years
  • travel, work or study in Australia during your stay
  • How long you can stay

    This is a temporary visa. The length of your stay in Australia will depend on where you studied and graduated from as the holder of a student visa and where you live as the holder of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or your Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream.

    If you:

  • studied and live in Category 2 area (1 year)
  • studied and live in Category 3 area (2 years)
  • Processing Time

    Your application can take longer to process if:

  • you do not fill it in correctly
  • we need more information from you
  • it takes us time to verify your information.
  • You must

  • be under 50 years of age
  • be in Australia when you apply for this visa
  • hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream and have held a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, as the main applicant
  • have a degree in a CRICOS-registered course from an education institution based in an eligible designated regional area, that led to the grant of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream
  • have lived in an eligible designated regional area for at least 2 years before applying for the second Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream
  • have evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants when you apply
  • Travel

  • You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while your visa is valid.
  • The time you spend outside Australia does not extend the visa.
  • Replacement Stream 485
    This visa is for current and former Temporary Graduate visa holders who lost time on their original visa due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. It lets you live, work and study in Australia temporarily.

    Stay

    Usually between 18 months and 5 years

    You will receive the same grant period as your previous visa, with the exception of:

  • If you were previously granted a Post Study Work visa for 2 years as a result your Master of Coursework qualification, you will now receive 3 years
  • If you were previously granted a Graduate Work Stream visa for 18 months, you will now receive 2 years. This is a temporary measure. Applicants should check the current period that applies when they lodge their application.
  • Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay for 5 years.
  • With this visa, you can

  • live, study and work in Australia temporarily
  • bring your immediate family members to stay with you.
  • You can include your spouse or children in your application, even if you have not previously done so
  • You must

  • make an application before 1 January 2027
  • have held a relevant Temporary Graduate visa that was granted before 15 December 2021
  • have lost time on your visa because of Australia’s COVID-19 travel restrictions
  • not have had your Temporary Graduate visa, or any visa granted after you held your Temporary Graduate visa, cancelled, unless it was cancelled because you asked for it to be.
  • Travel

  • You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while your visa is valid.
  • The time you spend outside Australia does not extend the visa.
