The Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 491) is a 5 years visa and you can apply for Permanent Residency after as little as 3 years. 

NSW has updated the Subclass 491 requirements and Occupation List for 2021-2022. There are 3640 places allocated for the year 2021-2022.

 

The NSW has included many occupations such as Cooks, Chefs, Bakers, Pastrycooks, Cafe or Restaurant Manager, Hotel or Motel Managers, Hairdressers, Carpenters, Community workers, Accountants, IT professionals, Teachers, Engineers, Enrolled Nurses and many more occupations. 

There are 3 streams under which you can apply for this visa and you must meet all the criteria in that stream.

To apply under Stream 1, you need to have your occupation in Combined Occupation List.

To apply under Stream 2 and 3, you need to have your occupation in Nominated Region’s Occupation List.

Check your eligibility

First of all, you need to see if your occupation is on the NSW 491 Occupation list. You can visit www.nsw.gov.au website to check the occupations list. 

Then you need to have a positive Skill Assessment of your occupation. There are different requirements from the different Skill Assessment Bodies.

Other requirements are that you need to be under 45 years of age.

You need to have at least competent English.

Calculate your points for the Subclass 491 for Age, English Language skills, Education, Employment experience and for other factors such as professional year, credential community language (NAATI).

You need a minimum 65 points to apply. As there are 3 streams under which you can apply, so you check under which Stream you are eligible to apply.

One point to be noted is that you don’t need to be living in regional NSW to apply for 491 in NSW. Under Stream 3, you can be living anywhere in Australia. But you must meet all other criteria.

Three Streams

Stream 1 – If you are living and working in Regional NSW

You can apply under this stream if you

·         hold a valid skills assessment for an occupation that appears on the Stream 1 Combined Occupation List.

·         have been living in a designated regional area of NSW for at least the previous twelve months; and

·         have been working in your nominated occupation, or a closely related occupation, in a designated regional area of NSW, for at least the previous twelve months

Stream 2 — If you have recently completed study in Regional NSW

You can apply under this stream if you

·         hold a valid skills assessment for an occupation that appears on your nominated region’s occupation list

·         have completed study or education with an education provider, where:

·         the study was completed within the previous 24 months

·         the education provider is in a designated regional area in NSW

·         the study meets the Australian study requirement (as determined by Home Affairs); and

·         the qualification obtained from this study was assessed as closely related to your nominated occupation by the relevant assessing authority; and

·         have lived in a designated regional area of NSW while completing your study

Stream 3 — If you are skilled in an occupation required in Regional NSW

·         hold a valid skills assessment for an occupation that appears on your nominated region’s occupation list

·         Be currently residing in an Australian state or territory

If you meet the criteria and you are eligible to apply, you complete an EOI in Skill select. Also Register your interest during a Submission window.

Submission windows for the 2021-22 financial year are the months of August, October, January, and March.
